What Are the Three Most Popular Electronic Component Types?

Each of those small electronic components serves a specific and precise purpose. If any of the components were missing, the circuit would not work properly. A team of electrical engineers designs and builds the circuit boards found in computers and other electronic devices. They select and solder the proper electronic components to the printed circuit board, which controls how the device works.

If you want to learn more about electronic components and how to utilize them in your own projects, you should first educate yourself about the functions of each component. The three most popular types of electronic components are listed below.
1. Variable Resistors and Resistors
A circuit board produces a desired result by routing voltage through its numerous electrical components in a precise way. Some components require a higher or lower voltage to function properly. The electronic component that regulates voltage or limits the current flowing in a circuit is called a resistor. A resistor is essentially a component designed to be a poor conductor of electricity. Electronic resistance comes in a variety of forms, but the ability of each component to resist a current is measured in Ohms.
A Variable Resistor, commonly known as a Potentiometer, is a type of variable resistor. Variable resistors are probably best known for their use as a volume control knob on your audio. It simply changes the level of resistance by moving the point of contact on the resistant substance.
2. Capacitor
A capacitor is an electronic component that stores energy. It’s made up of two metal plates connected with an insulator like ceramic, Mylar, or electrolytic. The quantity of energy that can be stored is determined by the capacitance of a capacitor, which is measured in Farads and the voltage across it.
When a current of electrons runs from one plate to another, a capacitor charges. As the capacitor grows more and more charged, the current naturally decreases since the plate can no longer hold any more electrons. Because the voltage across the capacitor is now equal to that of the source, it is deemed charged when it reaches that limit.
3. Inductors
DC currents move in one direction, like a stream or a river. AC currents however, alternate the direction they flow indefinitely. An inductor resists changes in current flow, allowing DC or low-frequency currents to pass through it more easily. In its most simple form and inductor is a coil of wire similar to a solenoid. A magnetic field is formed around the coil when current travels through it, storing potential energy. The magnetic field will collapse on itself and release the potential energy if the power supply is shut off.
