Five Ways of Buying Electronic Components

As the electronics industry has grown and demand on supply chains has increased, original electronic manufacturers (OEMs) and electronic manufacturing service (EMS) providers have had to rethink how they source components. Due to challenges including extended lead times, part shortages, and reliance on legacy parts, most manufacturers end up working with a number of vendors to get all of the parts they need during the product's lifecycle. There are five types of electronic component suppliers from which to pick.

Suppliers’ Types:

Different providers provide different advantages and value offerings. The following is a list of each type:

1. Direct from factory

When a corporation buys factory direct, they are buying directly from the manufacturer of the component (OCM). When you buy electronic components this way, you can rest assured that you’re getting real, legitimate parts with complete product traceability. It is generally preferable to deal directly with the manufacturer. However, in order to qualify as a direct customer, a company’s spending must be substantial.

2. Distributor with a license/franchise

These suppliers cooperate closely with the OCM. Because of the traceability, buying electronic components from authorized or franchised distributors has a substantially lower risk of receiving questionable parts. These vendors also provide flexible scheduling and inventory options that are rarely matched by the plant unless the spend or volume warrants it. While this type of supplier may stretch the supply chain a little, it gives OEMs and EMS providers more freedom because they are not beholden to a single source.

3. Independent suppliers

Independent distributors are typically unaffiliated with any single brand or franchise and source parts from all over the world. If you require a part that has become obsolete, an independent distributor may be your only alternative other than redesigning. In addition, this type of supplier can help with long lead times and part shortages. Independent distributors are not all made equal. Buyers should conduct research and establish that the independent distributor from which they intend to purchase electronic parts is certified and employs suitable counterfeit detection and testing processes.

4. Catalog Supplier

These vendors typically offer a wide range of product lines in small batch sizes. They frequently don’t have a minimum order quantity (MOQ), allowing them to offer smaller, more exact product quantities, and most offer next-day delivery. Electronic components with this level of ease are normally more expensive, hence the unit price is frequently overstated.

5. Hybrid supplier

Some distributors have begun to function in a hybrid capacity. Hybrid distributors can aid you in purchasing electrical parts while also offering independent distribution and having authorized or franchised line relationships
